Archie Roach is an internationally acclaimed singer, musician and songwriter. His albums have won Aria Awards and a Human Rights Award. And in 2015, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to music and his support of social justice.
The Peace Run too, seeks to recognise individuals that are valued for their contributions towards peace and positive leadership in their communities.
When Moyne Shire Mayor Jim Doukas was contacted by the Peace Run Co-ordinator for Western Victoria and asked if there were any outstanding citizens that Port Fairy wished to honour in this way, he had no hesitation in immediately nominating Mr Archie Roach for this award.
Archie, he said, is an example of triumph over adversity and an inspiration to us all in his ability to find hope and positivity in whatever life brings.
Archie truly exemplifies the ideals of the Peace and Oneness that the Peace Run hold dear. And so, we were delighted to present him with the Peace Run's highest award – the Torch-Bearer Award – at a reception hosted by Moyne Shire Council at The Drill Hall in Port Fairy on June 28, 2017.
Having suffered personal hardships and grief during his lifetime, he continues to find love in his heart for the people, country and community that he calls his home. Moreover, he continues to find hope for a better world through his interactions especially with the young people in his community, as he himself told us at the award ceremony.
He felt truly grateful to be honoured with the Torch-Bearer Award this year at a civic reception in Port Fairy where almost the whole township was represented.
