After an initial briefing by Harashita Sunaoshi, our Kyoto Peace Run coordinator, the team headed to the Sakyo Ward Office for the official opening ceremony.

10日前からピースラン・関西大学＆京都精華大学の学生によるポスター展示がされています。
We were also surprised to meet the cute and playful mascot, Akari-chan from Kyoto Sakyo Council of Social Welfare, who promotes the Sakyo Wards’ social integration projects which help foster a feeling of community oneness and togetherness.
左京区社会福祉協議会のゆるキャラ「あかりちゃん」が応援に駆けつけてくれました。大文字の送り火をイメージした頭は、左京が暮らしやすい街になるようにという熱い思いを表しているのだそう。平和を願う心に燃える炎を表しているピーストーチと共通するものがありますね。
We were fortunate to meet members of the Senior Citizens Walking Club, who intended to brave the rain and walk with us along the Takano River path for the first two kilometres from the Sakyo Ward Office.
地元のシニア３グループ、「左京からだの学校OB会」、「左京老セン ウォーキングクラブ同好会」、「松賀茂公園体操」から、最初の２キロの歩き出しをしてくださるメンバーの方が雨の中、駆けつけてくださいました。ありがとうございます。
This Peace Run came to fruition with the kind and dedicated help of so many people. In particular, Section Head Yuzuru Sakamaki (2nd right) and Coordinator Yuki Hidaka (far right) of Kyoto City's Community Collaboration Department have helped us with their genuine concern and understanding.

One of Harashita's English students and her friend came from Kyoto Seika University to meet the team and to experience the spirit of the Run.

Amongst the walkers was Mr Hideaki Kouchi , a 94 year old marathon runner.
Mr Kouchi only began running at age 53 and since then has completed 11 marathons and still runs 10km every morning. He is planning to complete his 12th marathon in Okinawa in December. He is aiming to set a new world record for his age group.
ピーストーチが左京区長から第一走者の河内英明さんに渡されました。河内さんは94歳の現在も現役のランナーで、53歳で始めたフルマラソンをこれまでに11回完走、マラソン完走のギネス記録に挑むそうです。
These walkers maintained a brisk pace and guided the team through some beautiful parts of Kyoto.

After saying goodbye to the Seniors Walking Group, we picked up the pace to complete the rest of the days kilometers.

We met some friendly folks along the way.
The final ceremony for the day was at the Koka Elementary School where we met with primary school children in the Arts and Crafts Room.
今日のゴールは京都光華小学校です。１年生から３年生までの37名が美術室でピースランを迎えてくれました。
Once the children's plates have been kiln fired, the Peace Run team will bring these gifts to the children of Palau during the second part of the Japan Peace Run.
みんなの思いを込めた平和のお皿の絵付けです。この後窯で焼かれ、次の訪問地である南太平洋の国パラオの子供たちに届けられます。
Two more of Harashita's English students met us at the school to participate in the final ceremony.

Some members of the team also had the opportunity to create their own pieces of art. Kanyaka from Bali, Indonesia, painted this plate with Jyotirmala.
Otis from USA painted the Peace Run logo.
Ms. Yamakawa, a Porcelain Artist, sponsored by the Kyoto Omuro Lions Club provided the children with ceramic plates and painting supplies. We are extremely grateful to them for making this special event possible.
