Bangor - Llanberis

Reported by Tamsin Evans 16.0 km

On Sunday 4th August 2019, two bronze Peace Statues were inaugurated in North Wales. An international team of runners carried the flaming Peace torch across the Menai bridge to the first statue in Treborth Botanic Garden and then on to the second statue in Llanberis by the lake in Padarn Country Park. On this historic occasion a new venture has been announced: the Peace Statue Challenge which invites Peace lovers to make a journey from one statue to the other and record their adventure on the website: https://www.peacestatuechallenge.org/

Please enjoy this short film of the occasion.

The International team of runners approach the entrance to Treborth Botanic Garden, part of Bangor University.

Stephen Vaughan Thomas is our MC.

Natalie Chivers (L) is Treborth’s Curator. Sarah Edgar (R) is the Chair of the Friends of Treborth. Both are tremendously happy with the new addition to their delightful Botanic Garden. They speak eloquently about the ethos of 'working together' which connects the Garden and the Peace Run.

Peace Run Director, Salil Wilson with Shaun Russell, the Garden’s Director.

Lord Elis-Thomas first met the Peace Run when he was the Presiding Officer at the Welsh Assembly. Since then he has met us many times, and run with us on quite a few as well!

The statue is on the Wales Coast Path, which runs through the Garden. The Path is very popular with walkers and runs the entire length of Wales’ coastline, some 870 miles.

With the Dawar family. Amit, Heather and 4 month old Lily live in North Wales and will regularly check and polish the statues.

The statue offers passers by a moment of Peace and reflection.

En route for Llanberis

The Llanberis Lake Railway engine tooted us into the Slate Museum’s grounds in Parc Padarn.

Councillor Edgar Wyn Owen, Chair of Gwynedd Council, holds the Peace Torch with Peace Run Director, Salil Wilson.

Lord Elis-Thomas unveils the Llanberis statue with the sculptor, Kaivalya Peter Torpy.

With the wonderful staff of Padarn Country Park, who have welcomed the Peace Run and the new peace statue to their 800 acre site.

Announcing the peace statue challenge on 500 million year old Welsh slate – very appropriate as the statue is so close to the National Slate Museum of Wales.
