Gouda - Waalre

Reported by Abhinabha Tangerman 115.0 km

The city of Gouda, world famous for its cheese.

The historical Gouda cheese market, in effect since 1198.

These cheeses are being sold in public (for show), just like they did it for many centuries.

We presented the Peace Run for hundreds of onlookers.

The microphone was in the form of a cheese.

Josef sounded the bell to officially open the cheese market.

Traditional Gouda cheeses.

Some Dutch ladies in traditional costumes joined us for the photo moment.

Hundreds of tourists from many different countries were present.

One of the cheese sellers we met told us that when he tastes a cheese, he knows which farmer has made it. This man sells 350.000 kilograms of Gouda cheese per day. That's right, per day.

The Torch went round to all the visitors.

Say 'cheese'!

The traditional game of negotiating cheese prices between the farmer and the seller. It happened like this for many centuries.

This Czech family is now visiting Holland, but they saw the Peace Run last year when it came through their own town.

We are very grateful and honoured to have been part of the historical cheese market in Gouda!

Running through much cooler weather today.

Beautiful Holland.

Pranayani joined us spontaneously for an extra day.

We arrived in the city of Gorinchem to meet the vice-mayor Joost van der Geest.

He is only 27 years old and plays field hockey, next to his demanding job in local politics.

The city also provided us with a delicious lunch. Many thanks to Margot Bijleveld for arranging the meeting.

After many weeks of drought there was rain again today. Just when we were running!

Last kilometer of the day...

...before we met our hosts of tonight.

Niek and Jenneke are a lovely Dutch couple who have already hosted the Peace Run many times. They are true friends of the Peace Run.

And they cooked us a delicious meal! A great end to a great day.
