The planting of the trees gave us a lot of joy and we spontaneously sang the song "Turkey, Turkey" that Sri Chinmoy, founder of the Peace Run, composed to honor the spirit of the country.

Çanakkale and Gallipoli (situated on the other side of Dardanelles) are hosting this weekend a great event: the first edition of Turkcell Gallipoli Peace Marathon. It is being organised by "GTP Tours" (a tourism agency from Çanakkale) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli Campaign, one of the biggest battles of the World War I. It took place here on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 where after 8 month of fierce fighting the Turkish soldiers managed to repel the invasion of allied powers (among others Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand). Around 250 000 soldiers on both sides died or were wounded. Turkey, Australia and New Zealand regard this battle as birth of their national consciousness and ever since have been commemorating it as one of the most important and most tragic episodes in their history. Now, the effort is to look at this even in history as a start of peaceful future instead of remembering its tragedy.

The founders of GTP Tours (from left: Mr Armağan Aydeğer, Mr Ahmet Çelik and Mr Ziya Artam) came out with the idea to launch the Gallipoli Marathon and emphasise it as a peace event. They named it: "Barış için koşuyorum" (I run for peace).
