Today we are visiting Scuole Elementari Orestano in Brancaccio, one of the poorer neighbourhoods in Palermo but a place with a strong community spirit. Much of this good community spirit is due to Don Pino Puglisi, who is portrayed in this mosaic in the school. He worked very hard to inspire children to attend school where they would be less likely to be recruited by Mafia gangs. In 1993, on his 46th birthday he was shot dead by the Mafia. He has been revered by everyone in the community since that time. His selfless work and approach to life is a perfect example of Peace in action.
Oggi visitiamo la Scuola Elementare Orestano, a Brancaccio, uno dei quartieri più poveri di Palermo ma un luogo con un forte spirito di comunità. Molto di questo spirito di comunità è dovuto a Don Pino Puglisi, che è ritratto in questo mosaico di piastrelle nella scuola. Ha lavorato con tutto se stesso per ispirare i bambini a frequentare la scuola, in modo da avere meno probabilità di essere reclutati dalle bande mafiose. At a visit to Santa Maria dello Spasimo Church, the ladies team offer a spontaneous presentation to a primary class of Giotto School of Palermo. The team get mixed up among the children in order to immerse themselves into the history of the place, under the guidance of Teacher Antonella Passarello. We have been delighted to see her on the 16th of November, at the Parade with the Peace Canvas along the old town crossings.
Durante una visita alla chiesa di Santa Maria dello Spasimo, il team femminile offre una presentazione spontanea ad una classe elementare della Scuola Giotto di Palermo. Il team si è poi mescolato tra i bambini per fare un tuffo nella storia del luogo, sotto la guida della Maestra Antonella Passarello. Siamo stati lieti di rivederla il 16 novembre alla sfilata del Telo per la Pace lungo le vie del centro storico.
